A genius surgeon, Baek Kang-hyuk, honed his skills on the battlefield. Bearing the absolute trust of the Minister of Health and Welfare, he arrives with the ambition to establish an emergency trauma surgery center at South Korea’s top hospital. The hospital’s management prioritizes budget allocation for the profitable field of proctology over the non-lucrative emergency surgery, leaving no proper medical staff assigned to it. Set against the backdrop of South Korea in 2015, this drama is based on a web novel inspired by the real-life figure, Professor Lee Kuk-jong.

The protagonist Baek Kang-hyuk, played by Ju Ji-hoon, prioritizes saving patients’ lives and has garnered high expectations from fans even before the drama’s production, thanks to his striking resemblance to both the web comic and the real-life model, Professor Lee Kuk-jong. The show premiered this year and has quickly gained explosive popularity and buzz since its first episode. The chemistry between Chu Young-woo, referred to as “the proctologist,” the mafia nurse, and the lovable proctology department heads is both entertaining and engaging!

Most refreshingly, the drama avoids the typical melodramatic romance often found in Korean dramas, receiving positive acclaim for it. Viewers hope that any romantic elements will not be forced in; if romance is to be included, a bromance would be preferred!

Customers of the Lighting Store

The boundary between life and death, the brightest light illuminating the dark alleyway—the lighting store is open late again today. The store’s owner adheres to the principle of serving every customer, no matter how few, and every night waits for patrons while wearing dark sunglasses. Drawn by the light in the midst of darkness, various customers open the store’s door. Among them are the actress Kim Min-ha, known worldwide for her role in pachinko, the seasoned actress Lee Jung-eun, Ohm Tae-goo, idol-turned-actress Seol-hyun, and the mysterious owner Ju Ji-hoon, creating a bizarre horror drama.

Kingdom

A zombie thriller drama set during the Joseon Dynasty. The K-zombies are genuinely terrifying, unlike the typical zombies or Western versions (like The Walking Dead); they are incredibly fast and strong, making them incomparable. The Walking Dead feels cute in comparison.

Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) embarks on a long and arduous journey to uncover the secret of the plant that causes the epidemic while protecting the common people from zombies amidst various schemes by the Jo family crest, who are trying to kill him for power.

Written by Kim Eun-hee, the creator of the dramas “Sign,” “Ghost,” and “Signal,” the show has aired two seasons, followed by a spin-off titled “Kingdom: Ashin’s Story,” starring Jun Ji-hyun, which concluded in the summer of 2021.

Hyena

Looking at the works that Ju Ji-hoon has appeared in, there is a notable lack of romance-themed projects, with perhaps only “Palace” and “Mask” standing out. This is likely because Ju Ji-hoon himself prefers genre-based works.

The drama “Hyena,” chosen after the great success of “Kingdom,” is a remarkable selection in that regard. Co-starring with the renowned actress Kim Hye-soo, their characters have a past relationship, but the drama primarily focuses on courtroom proceedings and the stories behind them rather than typical romantic moments, making it quite interesting.

As can be felt from the poster, Kim Hye-soo, who has persevered like a weed through hardships and adversities, contrasts with Ju Ji-hoon, who has lived a life of privilege in an elite environment. The fact that Kim Hye-soo, with her strong survival instincts, is unmanageable is amusing (which is probably why he is enamored with her). Occasionally, Ju Ji-hoon asks Kim Hye-soo, “Did you ever like me?” while she teasingly replies, “I never took it seriously. I just used you,” yet they end up kissing. This drama is genuinely entertaining and highly recommended!

Jirisan

“Jirisan” is a mystery drama about people climbing mountains and people protecting mountains and people, written by Kim Eun-hee, the writer of “Kingdom.” The leads are Jeon Ji-hyun and Ju Ji-hoon, the prince from “Kingdom.” Additionally, the director is the one who worked on “Mr. Sunshine,” which raises expectations for this drama even further. This is very attractive story about the sacred mountain ‘Jiri-san’ which is located in southern part of Korea.

Love is a One-Way Bridge

On the same day and with the same name, the families of Seok Ji-won and Yoon Ji-won have a terrible relationship, almost like arch-enemies. After a painful breakup at age 18, the two, who have been rivals, reunite after 18 years, leading to a war-like romance. This tvN weekend drama will air from November 23, 2024, to December 29, 2024. Personally, I found the story development a bit slow and not very typical for a weekend drama, but Jeong Yu-mi is undeniably cute, and her chemistry with Ju Ji-hoon feels great.
