I never expected it to be so moving. Because I didn’t know the meaning of the title ‘폭싹 속았수다’. It sounds quite strange to most of Koreans. It doesn’t sound like romantic and interesting drama at all. Actually It’s said that this is a Jeju Island dialect expression that means “thank you for your hard work.”
Contrary to the title, the casting boasts a top-tier, high-cost lineup of Park Bo-gum and IU. In addition to the leads, supporting actors such as Yeom Hye-ran, Moon So-ri, and Oh Jung-se also consist of renowned actors.
Im Sang-chun, a mysterious drama writer who rose to fame with popular works like ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ and ‘Fight For My Way’ ,but never appears in public, has teamed up with Kim Won-seok, a talented director known for directing ‘Misaeng (Incomplete Life)’ and ‘My Dear Mister’.

Stories

The story begins in the seas off Jeju Island in the 1950s.
In this village, during an era when finding food was a struggle, the mothers and grandmothers supported themselves by diving into the sea to harvest fish and abalone. The protagonist, Aesun, also had a mother who was one of haenyeo (female diver).

Undaunted by the strong spirit of the haenyeo, Aesun is a clever and ambitious young woman. She enjoys reading and writing poetry and dreams of one day attending university in Seoul.

However, her impoverished family circumstances and the societal barriers against women suffocate her. Having lost her father at a young age, and now her mother left her, Aesun has nowhere to go and is forced into marrying a divorced middle-aged mean man with two sons.

Beside Aesun, always protecting her, is Gwan-shik, a man 1 year older than Aesun, treated her like a princess. He’s a son of a fishmonger from the island, a man who doesn’t even understand the ‘nostalgia’.

Characters

Oh Ae-sun
IU & Middle-aged: Moon So-ri

An ambitious and precocious girl. With a small frame and sparkling black eyes, she constantly rebels against the island’s customs that she doesn’t agree with, her mother who abandoned her to remarry, and her own reality. Soon must be a strong person in many ways and endures a miserable childhood and adolescence.

But she has no intention of succumbing to reality and dreams of becoming a poet and living in Seoul someday.
She absolutely refuses to marry an island man. She would never marry a man who doesn’t understand the meaning of nostalgia.

Yang Gwan-shik
Park Bo-gum as & Middle-aged: Park Hae-joon

A taciturn and steadfast boy, like “iron.” A true man among men who works diligently, sincerely, and consistently without wavering, always silently and assiduously.

He shows absolute loyalty only to Aesun. He gives her fish, prepares a chair so she can read a book comfortably, and sells her cabbages in her place.

Everyone around them knows of his deep love, but he’s never once expressed it to Aesun – a man of few words and clumsy in romance.

He freezes when he sees Aesun smiling brightly, and freezes again when he sees her crying, not knowing what to do. The only person in the world who can train and lead this man is Aesun.

Just four episodes in, and I’m already overflowing with tears of emotion. I’m confident this will be the best drama of this year.
